A 1996 graduate of Oconee County High School, Tommy Malcom received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Georgia College of Education in 2000 and 2001. Presently Tommy is completing his sixth year as a teacher in Gwinnett County and pursuing doctoral work at the University of Georgia.  Tommy is a deacon at Briarwood Baptist Church where he currently teaches Sunday School and actively helps with children’s, youth, and young adult ministries.

“Since my 1978 arrival in Athens at St. Mary’s Hospital, visiting Athens Regional Library as a child, and traveling with my grandfather on his peanut route in Walton County -- I have been growing just as Georgia has. Today, I would like to offer my candidacy to represent and serve our sprawling Senate district from the foothills of Stone Mountain in Loganville, through Oconee County, all the way to the steps of the University of Georgia Arch in downtown Athens.”

“I believe my conservative principles and experience while on the Oconee County Board of Education since 2001 can provide a unique perspective in the Georgia Senate. Whether by representing family values, schools and college-campuses, the business community, or locally elected governing bodies such as boards of education, city councils, and county commissions - - I can bring an effective perspective as a school teacher and elected leader which ensures the local needs of the entire 46th District are represented well in Atlanta.”

“Issues surrounding education, transportation, and conservation definitely unite our Senate district. We need visionary leadership in Atlanta that prepares us for the coming decades in Georgia without ignoring local taxpayers.  In the days ahead I look forward to earning your support and vote.”

Republican and current Oconee County Board of Education member Tommy Malcom announced his intentions to run for the State Senate District 46 seat comprising parts of Walton, Clarke, and all of Oconee County.   Tommy has lived within the Senate district since 1978 and was initially elected in 2000 and re-elected in 2004 to represent Oconee County citizens on their local Board of Education.  Throughout his terms on the Board of Education, he has served at times as vice-chair and legislative liaison.  While an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia, Tommy began serving as a member of the school system advisory committee during the preliminary planning of North Oconee High School.
